With the rising anti-Asian sentiment across the U.S. since the emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic, EastBridge Foundation (EBF) partnered with Chinese-American Planning Council (CPC) to implement an afterschool program to raise student awareness and increase understanding of Asian American history. The program curriculum is based on educationl materials developed by the Asian American Education Project (a subset of the non-profit organization Asian Americans Advancing Justice). Topics covered included immigration, historical stereotypes, Anti-Asian hate, raising community awareness and coalition building. The program consisted of a series of interactive workshops where a facilitator introduced/presented material for a topic to be followed by a group discussion. A total of 166 students from 6 NYC areas public schools (5 high schools and 1 middle school) participated in the program during the spring and summer of 2022. Student feedback was very positive. Most students expressed a deeper interest and understanding of Asian American history upon completion of the program.
